Approaching your parents about estate planning

Posted by Joshua Gunsher, Esq. | Jun 20, 2022 | 0 Comments

Over the years, you've been used to your parents taking care of your needs. This is something that has continued even into your adult life.

Nonetheless, the aging process is inevitable and it's now your parents who need a little help. You're concerned that they haven't done much planning over their future, and you think this should be addressed. What's the best way to go about this?

Include the whole family

While you are rightfully concerned about the well-being of your parents, you shouldn't go charging in on your own. Have a discussion with your siblings and other close family members, so that you're all on the same page. This way, you can share the load and reach resolutions together.

Sometimes, when family members feel like they have been excluded, this can cause disputes later on. Estate planning documents may end up being challenged in court, which is a hassle that nobody wants in the end.

Give a full explanation

You don't want your parents to feel overwhelmed when you approach them. You also don't want to sound morbid. It may be beneficial if you explain the various estate planning tools that could be helpful to them.

This often eases the minds of elderly relatives, as they begin to see that estate planning is about more than just death. If you've taken estate planning measures yourself, sharing this fact can also be of great comfort to your parents.

Estate planning is vastly important and it shouldn't be ignored. When trying to assist your parents, remember that you are not on your own. Seeking legal guidance can help to ensure that everyone's rights and best interests are protected.
